 Position Summary

The Senior Accountant is a hands-on, technically strong finance professional responsible for accurate and timely accounting, reporting, tax & payroll compliance, cost accounting and month-/year-end closings. This role will coordinate day-to-day financial activities, supervise junior accounting staff, and provide management with clear, actionable financial information to support decision-making.

Main Duties & Responsibilities

 Transactional Accounting & Reconciliations

  • Verify, allocate, post and reconcile Accounts Payable (AP) and Accounts Receivable (AR) transactions on a regular basis.

  • Maintain supplier and customer ledgers; resolve discrepancies and aging issues.

  • Reconcile bank accounts, intercompany balances and general ledger control accounts monthly.

Reporting & Financial Analysis

  • Prepare, analyse and present monthly, quarterly and annual financial reports (P&L, balance sheet, cash flow) with commentary on variances and trends.

  • Produce management reports and dashboards that summarize the company’s financial status and KPIs.

  • Assist management with budgeting, forecasting and cash-flow planning.

Month-End & Year-End Close

  • Lead month-end and year-end closing processes, ensuring timely posting of accruals, prepayments, provisions and closing journals.

  • Coordinate external year-end audit processes and provide required schedules and explanations.

 Tax, Payroll & Compliance

  • Monitor and ensure compliance with Ethiopian tax laws, regulations and filing deadlines (VAT, withholding tax, income tax, etc.).

  • Prepare and process monthly payroll, social security and other statutory payments; ensure accurate payroll tax calculations and filings.

  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of regulatory changes that affect accounting and tax.

Cost Accounting & Internal Controls

  • Develop, maintain and improve the cost accounting system and product/service costing procedures.

  • Conduct internal cost audits and periodic reviews to ensure accuracy of inventory costing and margin analysis.

  • Design and maintain robust internal controls over financial processes; recommend and implement improvements.

Coordination & Supervision

  • Coordinate all finance function activities including AP, AR, payroll, fixed assets, and inventory accounting and treasury operations.

  • Supervise and mentor junior accountants and finance clerks; review their work and provide training where needed.

  • Work closely with procurement, operations, sales and logistics teams to ensure accurate financial recording and timely information flow.

 Ad hoc & Strategic Support

  • Support special projects such as system implementations, process automation, and business due diligence.

  • Provide insights and recommendations to improve profitability, working capital management and operational efficiency.

  • Serve as a key finance contact for banks, auditors, tax authorities and external advisors.

Job Requirements

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or related field.

  • Minimum 5 years of progressive accounting experience; at least 2 years in a senior or supervisory role. Experience in import/export, pharmaceuticals, or distribution is an advantage.

  • Strong practical knowledge of Ethiopian taxation and payroll regulations.

  • Proficient in accounting software

  • Demonstrated experience preparing financial statements and supporting external audits.
