Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia (HFE) is a pioneering organization dedicated to the prevention and treatment of obstetric fistula and related maternal health issues. Founded on compassion and excellence, HFE strives to restore health and dignity to women across Ethiopia through treatment, prevention, and rehabilitation programs.

One of our key initiatives, Project Zero, aims to achieve fistula eradication woreda by woreda, ensuring that no woman suffers needlessly from this preventable condition.

We already launched this program in some parts of the country.  We also want to ensure this project in Sidama Region, central Sidama zone, Arbeguna Woreda, and in Central Ethiopia, Western Gurage Zone, Gedebano Gutazer Wolene Woreda.

For the successful implementation of the program, HFE needs to employ an experienced candidate as per the given job title and responsibilities.

To collaborate and work as a team with PZ team and other stakeholders in the prevention of obstetric fistula, Identification and referral of hidden obstetric fistula patients and facilitate their treatment. Actively participate in project –Zero Fistula Eradication project team activities. 

Major Duties and Responsibilities of a prevention Officer includes the following, but are not limited to:

  1. As a member of the Project-Zero team, coordinate Zonal Health desk, Woreda Health Offices, Health Centers, health posts, and other stakeholders to identify hidden fistula cases, raise awareness creation and strengthen the existing referral system.

  2. Coordinate activities for patient identification and facilitate treatment in collaboration with the project –Zero team at Yirgalem or Addis Ababa Hamlin fistula center and other partners as per the action plan of the national fistula task force.

  3. Submit timely report providing details of patient identification, trainings, and other activities.

  4. Organize training for the Health Center staff and health Extension Workers on fistula patient identification and referral linkage.

  5. Participate in organizing resources to make sure that individual plans for patient reintegration and livelihood care are appropriately implemented.

  6. Participate in the project Zero pregnant women cohort study and other surveys as part of fistula prevention.

  7. Participate in Monitoring and evaluation activities of the project.

  8. Actively participate in the Fistula Patient Identification Process, in collaboration with Prevention officers at Yirgalem and Addis Ababa Fistula hospitals and other stakeholders in awareness creation, strengthen the existing referral system, and facilitate their treatment.

  9. Perform other related tasks as requested by the team leader, the project team leader

Job Requirements

Education Requirement: 

  • BSc in Midwifery, public health, or MSc in Maternal & Child Health-related fields

Work Experience

  • 3+ years of clinical experience at the health center level in mobilizing community-based programs.

Key competencies and professional expertise required:

  • Fluent in English, Amharic, and other local languages, and able to communicate in other local languages is preferred. 

  • Strong interpersonal, intercultural communication skills, able to work well both within a team and independently under stressful conditions.

  • Proven clinical experience, working in the delivery of maternal and child health services.

  • Proven experience in developing and implementing service delivery protocols, norms, and standards.
