Position Title: Finance Officer

Reports to: Finance and Administration Head

Duty Station: Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

Contract Type: Fixed-term, 12 months (with possible renewal)

alignAfrica is a national NGO registered in Ethiopia in April 2009, working to promote equitable and sustainable development through programs in health & nutrition, education, economic empowerment, governance, and peace building. The organization operates in Amhara, Oromia, Tigray, Addis Ababa, and emerging regions including Afar, Gambella, and Benishangul-Gumuz.

The Finance Officer will support alignAfrica’s finance and accounting functions by ensuring effective financial management, accurate recording, and compliance with organizational policies and donor regulations. The position will contribute to timely financial reporting, budget monitoring, and internal control systems that strengthen accountability and transparency across programs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain up-to-date financial records and ensure all transactions are properly authorized, recorded, and supported with adequate documentation.

  • Prepare monthly bank reconciliations and cashbooks, and manage petty cash disbursements.

  • Support budget preparation, monitoring, and variance analysis for both organizational and project budgets.

  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports for management and donors.

  • Ensure compliance with Ethiopian tax laws, government regulations, and donor financial requirements.

  • Process payments, advances, and liquidations in line with alignAfrica’s financial procedures.

  • Support internal and external audit processes, ensuring timely response to audit queries.

  • Maintain an organized filing system for financial documents and support procurement and logistics teams as needed.

  • Assist in capacity building of project and field staff on financial management procedures.

  • Perform any other finance-related tasks assigned by the Finance and Administration Head.

Job Requirements

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (Master’s degree or professional certification such as ACCA/CPA is an advantage).

  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in NGO financial management.

  • Strong knowledge of Ethiopian financial laws, taxation, and NGO accounting standards.

  • Proven experience using accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, Peachtree, or similar).

  • Strong analytical, communication, and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines with accuracy and attention to detail.

  • High level of integrity, confidentiality, and professionalism.

Competencies

  • Excellent command of spoken and written English and Amharic.

  • Strong computer literacy (Excel, Word, and accounting systems).
