The SBCC Officer for Cholera Response will be responsible for designing, coordinating, and implementing community engagement and risk communication activities aimed at preventing and controlling cholera outbreaks. The officer will lead behavior change interventions that promote hygiene practices, timely health-seeking behavior, and community ownership of cholera prevention activities. The role involves close coordination with IMC’s health, WASH, and communication teams, as well as with local authorities and community structures.

Duties & Responsibilities:

1. SBCC Strategy and Planning

  • Develop and implement context-specific SBCC strategies and work plans for cholera prevention and control.

  • Conduct rapid community assessments to identify barriers and motivators to healthy behaviors.

  • Ensure alignment of SBCC activities with national cholera communication guidelines and cluster strategies.

  • Collaborate with WASH and health teams to design integrated cholera prevention messages and tools.

  • Coordinate the production and dissemination of IEC materials (posters, leaflets, radio spots, etc.).

2. Community Engagement and Mobilization

  • Organize and facilitate community dialogues, focus group discussions, and outreach sessions in cholera-affected areas.

  • Strengthen community networks, including local leaders, women’s groups, youth, and health volunteers, to support cholera prevention.

  • Train and supervise community mobilizers and health promoters in interpersonal communication and participatory approaches.

  • Promote early care-seeking behaviors and use of Cholera Treatment Units (CTUs) among communities.

3. Risk Communication and Messaging

  • Support development and dissemination of clear, accurate, and timely messages on cholera prevention and response.

  • Collaborate with media outlets to ensure consistent and culturally appropriate messaging.

  • Engage religious and traditional leaders to enhance message credibility and reach.

  • Collect and document community feedback to inform continuous message refinement.

  1.  Monitoring, Reporting, and Learning

  • Monitor and evaluate SBCC activities, ensuring quality implementation and community participation.

  • Collect and analyze data on knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) to assess impact of interventions.

  • Prepare and submit regular activity reports, success stories, and lessons learned.

  • Contribute to project reviews, learning sessions, and after-action reviews.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s degree in public health, Health Promotion, Communication, Sociology, or related field (Master’s preferred).

  • Minimum 3 years of relevant experience in SBCC, health promotion, or community mobilization in humanitarian or public health settings.

  • Proven experience in cholera, WASH, or epidemic response communication campaigns.

  • Strong facilitation, interpersonal communication, and community engagement skills.

  • Experience in developing IEC materials and using mass and interpersonal communication approaches.

  • Fluency in English and local language(s) is essential.

  • Commitment to IMC’s mission, values, and humanitarian principles.

  • Strong coordination, teamwork, and leadership skills.

  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and report-writing skills.

  • Ability to work independently under pressure and meet deadlines.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and data management tools.
