Job Description

Integrated for Health and Development Organization (ISHDO) is an Ethiopian NGO with 28 years of experience in the development, health, and education sectors. With recent approval from the Federal ACSO, ISHDO has secured a two-year international grant to establish a cost-share clinic.

This new clinic will operate on a compassionate, medium-cost share model, dedicated to providing affordable, high-quality healthcare. Our approach empowers patients to be active partners in their health journey. We are now seeking a Clinical Nurse.

The Clinical Nurse is a registered professional responsible for providing comprehensive, patient-centered nursing care across the lifespan. S/he will perform nursing procedures, administer medications, monitor patient conditions, and provide health education and emotional support to patients and their families. The role requires a high degree of clinical competence, empathy, and the ability to function effectively within the Ethiopian public health system, often with limited resources.

Key Role and Responsibilities

Direct Patient Care:

  • Triage & Assessment: Perform rapid and systematic triage of patients, prioritizing care based on clinical need. Conduct comprehensive nursing assessments, including physical, psychological, and social aspects.

  • Medication Administration: Safely prepare and administer medications (oral, IV, IM, SC) as prescribed by a physician, adhering to the "10 Rights" of drug administration.

  • Procedure & Wound Care: Perform essential nursing procedures such as wound dressing, catheterization, IV cannulation, nebulization, and assisting with minor surgical procedures.

  • Monitoring: Closely monitor and record vital signs (Temperature, Pulse, Respiratory & Blood pressure), fluid intake/output, and other critical parameters. Recognize and report any changes in patient condition promptly

  • Emergency Response: Provide immediate life-saving interventions in emergencies (e.g., shock, hemorrhage, cardiac arrest) as part of the BEmONC/CEmONC (Basic/Comprehensive Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care) team, where applicable.

  • Infection Prevention: Strictly adhere to and enforce infection prevention and control (IPC) protocols, including proper hand hygiene, use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and sterilization of equipment.

B. Collaborative & Documentation Duties:

  • Collaboration: Work collaboratively with physicians, health officers, pharmacists, and peers to develop and implement patient care and outreach plans.

  • Referral: Facilitate timely and appropriate referral of patients to higher-level facilities or specialized services as needed, following the Ethiopian health tier system.

  • Record Keeping: Maintain accurate, complete, and confidential patient records (e.g., patient charts, Kardex, registration books) in both written and electronic formats (where available).

  • Handover Reports: Provide clear and concise verbal and written handover reports during shift changes.

 Health Education & Counseling:

  • Provide individual and group health education on topics such as nutrition, family planning, immunization, hygiene, and disease prevention (e.g., HIV/AIDS, TB, Malaria).

  • Counsel patients and families on managing illnesses, adhering to treatment plans, and promoting healthy behaviors.

D. Administrative & Facility Duties:

  • Manage and maintain inventory of medical supplies, emergency drugs, and equipment in the unit. Submit reports and requests to ISHDO timely.

  • Ensure medical equipment is clean, functional, and ready for use.

  • Participate in quality improvement initiative and clinical training sessions and meetings.

  • Supervise and mentor cleaners and other junior clinic staff as required.

E. Community HIV service 

  • Coordinate and manage outreach HIV prevention and testing activities 

  • Coordinate outreach HIV testing and referral activities and mentoring support to peer navigators 

  • Provide ethical and safe HIV testing and counseling service

Job Requirements

Educational Qualification:

  • BSc in Nursing (BScN) OR Diploma in Nursing from a recognized nursing education institution in Ethiopia. 

  • Valid lab professional license and registration to practice in Ethiopia.

  • 2-4+ years of progressive clinical nursing experience, Prior experience in a private health facility or medium clinic is an asset.

  • Training on HIV testing and ART is additional value.

  • Clinical Proficiency- Demonstrated skill in nursing procedures (IV cannulation, dressing, medication administration).

  • Strong understanding of medical ethics, nursing standards, pharmacology, and common disease pathologies in the Ethiopian context.

  • Expertise in IPC protocols; Proficiency in basic life support (BLS); Advanced life support (ALS) is an advantage. Knowledge of BEmONC signal functions is highly desirable.

  • Compassionate with a genuine desire to help and care for others. High ethical standards and commitment to patient confidentiality.

  • Strong Communication Skills and teamwork.

Working on HIV testing and counseling and ART clinic 

Flexibility to work extended hours (weekends or evenings) as per clinic schedules and needs.
