Job Description

Norwegian Church Aid (NCA) is an international non-profit organization mandated to work with people around the world to eradicate poverty and injustice. NCA is affiliated with the World Council of Churches and is a member of the ACT Alliance with a presence in 31 countries worldwide. 

In Ethiopia, NCA has been operating since 1974, marking 50 years of service in the country this year. NCA’s programs are implemented together with local faith-based partners. NCA is a member of various civil society networks, coordination mechanisms, and clusters in Ethiopia. In its current strategic period (2025-2029), NCA Ethiopia implements programs focused on Climate Resilient Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (CRWASH); Climate and Environment Stewardship/Economic Development and Food Security; Peacebuilding; Gender-Based Violence/Sexual/ Reproductive Health; and Humanitarian Emergency Response.

NCA is a member of the ACT Alliance, a coalition of organizations working together in over 140 countries to create positive and sustainable change in people’s lives.

NCA would like to invite interested and qualified applicants suitable for a WASH Assistant position to be assigned to a short-term project.

The WASH assistant works with the CRWASH team, supports the team and partners in planning and implementation of projects, mainly with a focus on sanitation and hygiene activities, preparation of reports, documentation of project information, and contributes to the improvement of the overall program. 

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Assist in planning and implementation of climate-resilient water, sanitation, and hygiene (CRWASH) projects, mainly with a focus on sanitation and hygiene activities. 

  • Support partners in organizing training of WASH Committees. 

  • Follow and support implementing partners on project activities related to hygiene awareness, sanitation service provision to local communities, schools, and health.   

  • Support market-based sanitation initiatives in different project areas. 

  • Involve and contribute to joint initiatives with other programs of NCA. 

  • Coordinate with the communication team and work on documentation of best practices, lessons learned, and success stories from WASH projects for knowledge sharing and replication. 

  • Join the team during travels to the field for monitoring, providing technical support to partners, and ensuring coordination and collaboration with stakeholders. 

  • Contribute to the write-up of periodic and final project reports. 

  • Ensure documentation of project information and timely uploading in the organization’s project information management system (PIMS). 

  • Support partners in implementing community-level sanitation and hygiene awareness campaigns, document and report events. 

  • Contribute to the establishment and training of WASH management structures at the community level. 

  • Support the M&E activities, including data collection, progress tracking, and compiling project outcomes.

  • Works in ensuring gender and inclusion of people with disabilities are integrated into sanitation and hygiene interventions to promote equitable access and participation.

  • Participate in coordination meetings and workshops with government offices, partner organizations, and other platforms to strengthen collaboration and information sharing, when assigned. 

  • Work closely with communities to understand their WASH needs, promote behavior change, and ensure community ownership of WASH facilities.

Job Requirements

  • BSc in Environmental Health or Public Health. The candidate should successfully pass the exit exam.

  • A minimum of six months of work experience in WASH projects, a passion to learn, and a commitment to contribute to a positive work environment. 

  • Additional IT/System/admin certification is an advantage.
