1. Background

The Consortium of CSOs comprising Advocates Ethiopia, Lawyers for Human Rights (LHR), and Mizan Young Lawyers Center has launched a joint project aimed at enhancing access to justice in the criminal justice system by providing legal aid services at and around police stations.

These organizations have extensive experience in delivering legal aid services and have come together to strengthen the quality, reach, and coordination of services across Addis Ababa, Adama, Hawassa, and Wolayita Sodo.

Within this consortium, Advocates Ethiopia is implementing the project titled “Advancing Human Rights through Pre-trial Legal Aid Services II”, with financial support from the French Development Agency (Agence Française de Développement - AFD).

The project seeks to improve access to justice for vulnerable individuals at the pre-trial stage, particularly at police stations. Accordingly, Advocates Ethiopia invites qualified candidates to apply for the position of Project Coordinator based in Adama with a possibility of mobility.

2. Job Description

The Project Coordinator will lead the day-to-day coordination, supervision, and reporting of project activities at the Adama Legal Aid Center. He/she will work under the supervision of the Program Coordinator and in collaboration with the Executive Director to ensure effective implementation and compliance with donor and organizational standards.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and oversee all legal aid services provided at the Adama Center.

  • Supervise and support Lawyers (Legal officers) and Assistant Lawyers (Paralegals) working under the project.

  • Facilitate and organize workshops, community awareness sessions, and stakeholder meetings.

  • Ensure all project activities comply with Advocates Ethiopia’s policies, donor requirements, and government regulations.

  • Prepare regular narrative and financial reports in coordination with the finance team.

  • Maintain proper documentation and records for all project activities and expenditures.

  • Conduct monitoring visits and follow-up with beneficiaries and local stakeholders.

  • Strengthen partnerships with justice sector institutions, community representatives, and local authorities.

  • Participate in consortium coordination meetings and contribute to learning and reporting processes.

  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Program Coordinator or Executive Director.

Job Requirements

 Required Qualifications

a. Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Law, or LLM, Project Management, Human Rights, or related Social Sciences.

  • Additional training in project management, monitoring & evaluation, advocacy, or human rights is an asset.

b. Experience

  • Minimum two (2) years of relevant experience in project coordination or management, preferably in legal aid or human rights projects.

  • Sound understanding of access to justice and criminal justice systems in Ethiopia.

c. Skills and Competencies

  • Excellent written and spoken communication in Afan Oromo, Amharic and English.

  • Strong organizational, leadership, and interpersonal skills.

  • Proficient in MS Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

  • Strong attention to detail, time management, and ability to work independently.

  • Ethical conduct, accountability, and ability to maintain confidentiality.

4. Reporting

The Project Coordinator will report to the Program Coordinator of Advocates Ethiopia and collaborate closely with the Executive Director and the Finance Personnel.
